West Basin Coring - As-Needed Sediment Sampling, Characterization and Disposal Consultation Services

The Marina West Basin is located on the northern shoreline of the City of San Francisco and is currently used by private recreational sailboats and motor boats. SAIC/ADH assisted SF DPW by performing maintenance dredging at the Marina West Basin to a permitted depth of -25 feet MLLW. Four core samples from nine dredge areas were collected for sediment characterization analysis of lithology, grain size, chemistry and toxicity. ADH provided field support for core collection, conducted sectioning of the core samples and documented visual descriptions.
The project team provided as-needed consultation services to SF DPW for sediment characterization monitoring programs to support maintenance dredging and new construction dredging along the City’s Bay front, inland lakes and reservoirs. Responsibilities included the following:
- Review and comment on existing reports
- Provide expert commentary
- Provide environmental regulatory plans and documentation
- Prepare sampling and analysis plans in accordance with applicable Federal, State, Regional, and local statutes, regulations and ordinances, planning and permitting of dredging and disposal activities
- Perform collection, analyses, and evaluation of resultant data pertaining to sediments, soils, water quality in marine, freshwater, land, and wetland environments and ecosystems.
ADH participated in and/or was responsible for the following:
- Sediment vibracore sampling:
- Ensured accurate positioning at sample locations, accurate target core lengths relative to actual mudline elevations, and ship-board duties for proper sample handling procedures
- Generation of lithologic coring logs
- Generation of samples to be analyzed for grain size and sediment chemistry analyses, and toxicity testing
- Pipe dredge sampling at Alcatraz Island and San Pablo Bay reference sites
