Client: Taber Consultants as performed for the City of Santa Cruz
Location: Santa Cruz, California
Project Description: The intent of proposed earthquake retrofit work was to construct soil
cement columns to strengthen weak and potentially liquefiable soils behind existing bridge
abutments in order to substantially reduce the risk of earthquake induced ground movement
sufficient to result in bridge collapse. The soil-cement column elements are expected to resist
ground movement in shear, and steel pile inserts were incorporated to provide a high level of
assurance of column continuity, strength and "ductility" in shear.
Task: ADH provided observation of installation activities and representative sampling for
the construction of 90 30- to 72-inch diameter soil-cement columns to depths up to 50 feet below
ground surface for the seismic retrofit and concrete barrier project of Market Street Bridge (No.
26C0088) located in Santa Cruz, California. Observation and reporting procedures were performed
in accordance with the requirements specified by Taber Consultants.
