Steel Reinforcement
H-Beam Installation
de Young Museum
San Francisco, CA
Prime Contractor: Rutherford & Chekene
Location: San Francisco, California
Project Description: Construct soil-cement columns and install soldier piles as the
foundation for shoring walls used during construction of the de Young museum. Some of the columns
were to remain after building construction as an additional soil stabilization feature. The
soil-cement column elements are expected to resist ground movement in shear, and steel pile inserts
were incorporated to provide a high level of assurance of column continuity, strength and
"ductility" in shear.
Task: ADH provided observation of installation activities and representative sampling for
the construction of 57 30-inch diameter soil cement columns to depths up to 60-feet below ground
surface as part of a foundation stabilization program located at the de Young Museum in San
Francisco, California. Observation and reporting procedures were performed in accordance with the
requirements specified by Rutherford & Chekene.
